How Successful School Transitions Helps

Whether your child is struggling to attend, stay in, or engage in school, Successful School Transitions is here to help.

Successful School Transitions provides an integrated team approach using a hands-on, research supported process to unlock most school refusal and avoidance problems. We are the bridge between your family and your child’s school, as well as with their therapeutic team. From beginning to end, Successful School Transitions will support your family, offering both Clinical Services and Coaching Services that are tailored to exactly what your child and family needs.

“We observed that traditional therapy did not meet our patients’ and their families’ needs… and we saw that school staff could not always meet with students and support them when they needed it most.”

Dr. Erica Miller

Determined problem-solvers with extensive experience and expertise working with kids, Dr. Erica Miller and Dr. Rebecca Sachs were driven to create Successful School Transitions.  After working in various settings for over two decades and repeatedly encountering students with profound difficulties attending school, getting to school, or both, Dr. Miller and Dr. Sachs were not content with the status quo. Dr. Miller and Dr. Sachs saw too many families burnt out from the burden of helping their children (un)successfully attend and participate in school; traditional therapy was not meeting the needs of children and families, and schools were unable to support students when it was most needed. Dr. Miller and Dr. Sachs knew the best way to help was to create two businesses that could work together to address school refusal and school avoidance: Successful School Transitions Psychology Services and Coaching Services

From day one, Successful School Transitions was created to address all the gaps in the current system.

As directors of both the Psychology Services and Coaching Services, Successful School Transitions’s programs can flexibly work for you and your child as stand alone supports or in a comprehensive, integrated way.  Given the uncertain educational landscape during the COVID-19 pandemic and different schooling options this year (remote, in person, and hybrid), our programs were purposely tailored to meet the range of students’ needs and take these realities into account.

Dr. Miller and Dr. Sachs work as a coordinated team, capitalizing on individual expertise and strengths. With collective experience working in schools, outpatient, day-treatment, hospital, and research settings Dr. Miller and Dr. Sachs have been able to hone their diagnostic skills to best understand school refusal and avoidance; they are often sought out to make sense of the most complicated behaviors in struggling children. Valuing honesty and with an approachable, down-to-earth style, Dr. Miller and Dr. Sachs will demystify the most confusing information in a practical way for you, your child, and professionals alike. They are well respected in many professional communities, including local and international Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) organizations.

“We decided to not simply accept this frustrating reality. Instead, we would create a program we knew our students and families deserved.”
